Returning TV Shows Fall 2012, DEXTER, HOMELAND, PERSON OF INTEREST and THE WALKING DEAD, What Will I Be Reviewing?

type='html'>

As you probably know there really has not been to much on TV lately, in the last three weeks that would be largely due to the Olympics, fair play but some TV would have been nice. If you read this blog often then you’ll know that I have been occupying myself with some box sets, first up was Dexter season 2, which was brilliant and then I have been watching Breaking Bad's second season, which was also brilliant. Thing is were are coming towards September now and you know what that means, good TV will be back with all of our regular favourites, here I want to give you an indication of what you can expect to see from Movies Music & Television during the Fall TV schedule of returning shows, what I will be watching and what I will be reviewing. I will review all of the returning season premieres, but from there I discuss below what I may continue with.

Dexter – Season 7 (Showtime, Sunday’s @9pm) – Premiere September 30th

It goes without saying really that I will be covering Dexter, if you read this blog often then you know its one of my favourite shows on TV, I didn’t watch the first four seasons but I’m looking to make up for that and have already watched seasons one and two, I am thinking now that we are getting pretty close to the season 7 premiere so maybe I’ll just leave seasons three and four so I can assure my weekly Dexter fix once season seven wraps. Season 6 was not one of the best for Dexter but I still really enjoyed it, especially the ending where Debra caught her adoptive brother plunging his knife into the chest of The Doomsday Killer Travis Marshall (Colin Hanks). I will be reviewing every episode of Dexter season 7, so subscribe to make sure you don’t miss out.

Dexter season 6 reviews

6.6 – Just Let Go
6.7 - Nebraska
6.9 – Get Gellar

Homeland – Season 2 (Showtime, Sunday’s @10pm) – Premiere September 30th

Homeland is a show which I really enjoyed and during it’s first season I watched and reviewed most episodes, it’s hard to pick a favourite but the finale was brilliant watching protagonist Brody (Damien Lewis) come full circle ready to blow up the US President, he didn’t go through with it of course and it now looks like he is going to run for office which will see Homeland’s second season take more of a political angle, I don’t mind that but I wouldn’t say its really what I look for in a TV show, as far as Homeland goes you can be sure I will be watching every episode but I’m thinking that maybe this is going to be a season premiere review, a possible mid-season and the season finale, unless of course it is really great and I feel the need to write about it every week.

Homeland season 1 reviews

1.1 - Pilot
1.3 – Clean Skin
1.4 – Semper I
1.5 - Blindspot
1.9 - Crossfire
1.11 – The Vest

Person of Interest – Season 2 (CBS, Thursday’s @10pm) – Premiere September 27th

Again, Person of Interest is a given, I will be watching and reviewing every single episode of this great show. Some people I heard of gave up on Mr’s Reese and Finch about three or four episodes in, all I can say to that is you should have stuck it out because is quickly became apparent that Person of Interest is not your normal weekly procedural, we now roll into the second season with questions looming large as to who Root is? And what she wants with Mr Finch, and more importantly who was on the other end of that telephone in the season finale closing scene? I’m sure POI will provide us with yet another fun thrilled ride.

1.1  Pilot
1.2  Ghosts
1.3  Mission Creep
1.4   - Cura Te Ipsum
1.5  Judgement
1.6  The Fix
1.7  Witness

1.14          Wolf and Cub
1.15          Blue Code
1.16          Risk
1.17          Baby Blue
1.18          Identity Crisis
1.19          Flesh and Blood
1.20          Matsya Nyaya
1.21          Many Happy Returns
1.22          No Good Deed
1.23          Firewall

As for episode 8 which I missed out first time around, I will watch that again when it airs in the UK, following that I will put out the review.

The Walking Dead – Season 3 (ABC, Sunday’s @9pm) – Premiere October 14th

I still have not seen season one of The Walking Dead, but I did really enjoy season two, more so towards the end and during its second stint on TV, this is one of those shows which breaks for the festive period and usually returns around February time, I reviewed a few episodes of the second season including the mightily impressive “Pretty Much Dead Already”, with season 3 I will be reviewing the premiere and then seeing where it goes from there, I will watch them all and hopefully with the introduction of all the new characters there will be something to talk about other than zombies.

The Walking Dead season 2 reviews

2.5 – Chupacabra

So there is the low down on what I will be watching and reviewing in all of our favourite returning drams this year, I’ll be back tomorrow with a list of new shows coming to TV this fall and I’ll talk there on which ones I will be watching and adding to the weekly reviews, ideally there will be about two.

New TV Shows Fall 2012, 666 PARK AVENUE, REVOLUTION, LAST RESORT, VEGAS and ARROW, What Will I be Reviewing?

type='html'>
Did you catch the post yesterday relating to all the returning shows that I will be watching and reviewing this year? No, well be sure to go check that out, if you didn’t and can’t be bothered then you should know that Dexter and Person of Interest will be the main two shows that I will be reviewing weekly, whilst also dipping in and out of Homeland and The Walking Dead. In this post I want to talk about all the new shows which will be coming our way this fall, which ones I will be watching and what will be added to my review list, your comments and suggestions are welcome as always and please let me know if there is anything I’ve missed which should be included here. I will review all the “Pilot” episodes of the shows which are mentioned below.

Revolution (NBC, Monday’s @10pm) – Premiere September 17th

I put out the trailer for NBC’s Revolution some time ago now and I have to say that out of everything that is new this season this is the show that I’m most looking forward to. The reasons? Well, firstly it’s brought to us by J.J. Abrams and his production company Bad Robot, responsible for shows like Lost and Person of Interest, however there names can also be seen alongside some of TV’s lesser shows, like Alcatraz for example. Revolution looks to be in a different league all together from Alcatraz though and seems like it could truly be the next Lost, although if like me you watch Person of Interest that is brilliant also. Revolution picks up its story fifteen years after the loss of all electrical power and energy, having mysteriously disappeared we follow a group of survivors (including Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito) on their mission to survive the world they find themselves in. It looks really good and I can’t wait to see how it works out, let’s just hope it fares better than Alcatraz and does miles better than NBC’s last drama effort Awake.

666 Park Avenue (ABC, Sunday’s @10pm) – Premiere September 30th

I’m not really sure what to make of this show right now, it does look really good but I fear for me that there may be a few hide behind the pillow moments, no only kidding I will watch this show but I’m unsure as to weather or not I will be reviewing it every week. The show has a supernatural edge but is billed as a drama, it follows the new managers of a hotel named 666 Park Avenue (of course), the new managers come to learn that there esteemed guests may not be all that they seem. I will probably watch the first few episodes and see how it goes from there.

Last Resort (ABC, Thursday’s @8pm) – Premiere September 27th

Last Resort is another show which I’m not really that sure on, the reason I say that is because of its scheduling. The premise here looks pretty good and we are set to follow a US Submarine crew who are out on exercise when they refuse to obey a direct order of firing missiles at Pakistan, their refusal makes them become the enemy and the US fire on them causing them to take refuge on a fictional island named Sainte Marina, knowing that they are now enemies of their own country they declare themselves a sovereign state with nuclear capabilities whilst also trying to find out who set them up. What puts me off? Well… Terra Nova came with an interesting premise which had a lot of people excited, but the scheduling was similar to this show in that it aired at 8pm, meaning family TV. I hope Last Resort turns out a little better but I guess we will have to wait and see.

Vegas (CBS, Tuesday’s @10pm) – Premiere September 25th

Set in the 1960’s I’m not so sure that Vegas will get my full attention, I let Magic City go by without watching the Pilot after all. Vegas does come with a strong cast and a mobster storyline through so you never know, maybe I’ll surprise myself. The show is the true life story of Sheriff Ralf Lamb (played by Dennis Quaid) who formerly worked as a rancher, he was the Sheriff in Clark County from 1961 to 1979 and this charts his battle against mobster Vincent Savino (Michael Chiklis). The show also stars Terra Nova’s Jason O’Mara, so I will watch the Pilot and then see how it goes from there I think.

Arrow (The CW, Wednesday’s @8pm) – Premiere October 10th

I know very little about this show other than its based on a DC comic book hero named Green Arrow who is clearly not famous enough to get a movie deal. Comic book adaptations are not really my thing if I’m honest, I don’t mind the movies but I attempted to watch The Cape a while back and that was terrible so I will treat the arrow as a back up in case all of the above fails to impress me.

So, that’s it for the new shows coming this year, Revolution is by far and away the favourite for me and we will just see how the rest get on, there will of course be British TV to review including The X Factor which features Nicole Scherzinger, BBC's Good Cop and Luther is also set to return which this year, then there is always movies and box sets, I'm currently a couple of episodes into season one of Sons Of Anarchy courtesey of LOVEFiLM Instant which I will be reviewing soon. Any thoughts?

TV Review: SONS OF ANARCHY - Pilot 1.1

type='html'>
Sons of Anarchy is a show which I have never really given much thought too, I know its immensely popular, obvious when its just been renewed for a sixth season. Away from never giving it much thought, I never really knew what it was about other than some dudes riding motorbikes, I had visions of handle bar moustaches on guys riding big American choppers (please don't take that the wrong way). It premiered back in 2008, what was I watching back then? Lost would have been top of my list right about that time followed very closely by Prison Break, then I didn't have a blog so watching pretty much everything that was on TV was not really of interest to me, now though? It's a different story I can't get enough TV and right now as you  know there really is not to much on TV, that's about to change I know but in the mean time I decided to put my LOVEFiLIM account to some use, they have the full four seasons of Sons of Anarchy available to view instantly, it's one of their services I have never used (usually just get Blu-rays through the door) but I have to say not only was I impressed with LOVEFiLM instant but also Sons of Anarchy.

I really didn't know what to expect from the show, I've never really read much on it so had no idea of storyline or plot. I have to say I was pretty impressed with both as well as the actors and characters involved, in the "Pilot" alone we are introduced to a lot of people all of whom it would seem are going to be central to the plot. It is the biker gang extravaganza I thought but with many different layers, from family drama to kick ass action. What I didn't expect was the gangster side of the storyline, I think that along with Sons of Anarchy's two leading men Ron Perlman and Charlie Hunnam are the two things which impressed me most, bikers are a pretty serious bunch and let's be honest we all know they like a beer or two, here we see all of that including the more humorous side of things which really helps to lighten up what can be pretty intense drama.

The story? SAMCRO, Sons of Anarchy Motorcylcle Crew Redwood Original, that's the name of the group of outlaw bikers who by day sit around their club, drinking beer or they are out riding their bikes, by night they are black market gun runners dealing in anything from pistols to high end assault rifles, they have the corrupt local Sheriff in their pocket and the whole town of Charming, California know they rule the roost. The reason they get away with it all? They look after their own, kind of give back to the community in a way. The show follows the life of the gang of course but more importantly Jackson "Jax" Teller who's father set them up years earlier with his pal Clarence "Clay" Morrow, Jax's father is not around these days and Clay has been rather quick to jump into the bed of his so called pal, that's ok though, biker rules I think, as long as Clay looks after his missus Gemma Teller (Katey Sagal).

The "Pilot" episode, although introducing us to a lot of people focuses primarily on Jax, the now Vice President of SAMCRO and soon to take the reigns as President. But, is that what Jax really wants? His newborn son is ill in hospital and in the mean time he finds a book which his father had started to write questioning the morals of SAMCRO and their involvement in the black market gun trade. Jax is beginning to question the morals of the gang himself, a move which doesn't sit well with his hard ass mother or Clay who needs to train him to be a "man". This episode starts with the SAMCRO warehouse full of guns being blown up by their rivals, Mexican gang "The Mayans", it's basically revenge from their on in for the Sons of Anarchy crew most of whom are completely nuts and will pretty much do anything to cement their reputation as tough guy Harley Davidson riders. I have no doubt that the story arch will involve Jax eventually becoming president, and maybe even move SAMCRO in a different criminal direction than what we have seen so far.

That backing crew who Jax and Clay have are a pretty impressive bunch though and all the actors involved really hold their own. I hadn't realised that Jax (Charlie Hunnam) is actually from Newcastle, England, exactly where I'm from, boy done good I suppose you could say considering he used to be in a local kids TV show named Byker Grove, and no, it had nothing to do with people on bikes, actually I never watched it so I couldn't tell you what it was about, but I'm pretty sure the budget didn't extend to Harley's. Charlie Hunnam does really well to disguise his Geordie accent, were known up here for our broad (almost Scottish) twang, and throughout the first two episodes of Son's I would never have guessed that the guy was from Newcastle.

This really was an impressive "Pilot" episode, one which set the series up well, giving us many different characters to chew the fat over, don't get me wrong it's not the best show on TV but like Spartacus this is good fun for guys, yeah your girlfrind or wife may not care for it to much other than looking at Charlie Hunnam without his clothes on, but trust me that's as far as their interest would probably go because Sons of Anarchy is a show about men being men, who just happen to all be hard asses and slightly crazy. I loved it.

Movie Review: DIE HARD 4.0 LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD Starring Bruce Willis

type='html'>
Yeah, sorry I haven’t been around for the last couple of days, but hey, I do have other stuff to do in the “real world” away from this blogging lark. Never mind normality of posting should restore soon (next week) as all the good TV is about to start. Come here often? Then you know that I have not been watching much TV lately, still though I have had plenty of movies to get through including this surprise addition to the Die Hard franchise which I originally saw a few years ago, this time around I caught it on TV and have to say I enjoyed it every bit as much as I did the first time round.

Starring: Bruce Willis, Justin Long, Timothy Olyphant and Maggie Q

The Plot

It’s yet another boring day at the office for New York veteran detective John McClane, that is until the FBI don’t have anyone around in their local field office to go pick up a computer hacker who may be responsible for hacking their Cyber Crime Division. Who gets the job? You guessed it, John McClane, however law enforcement are not the only people after young computer Hacker Farrell (Justin Long) who helped a psycho cyber terrorist out with some computer code which would help him pretty much shut down the US. Arriving at the scene to pick up Farrell shots begin to get fired, McClane gets the kid out but is the new technology involved all a little to much for him?

The Verdict

First off, is it just me or does Bruce Willis keep getting cooler the older he gets? A 50 something guy who still kicks serious ass and shouts Yippe Ki Yay Motherf***** like he is in his early 30’s. You gotta hand it to Bruce the guy can still kick it with the kids and teach them a thing or two about being cool while he’s at it.

As for Die Hard 4.0, or Live Free or Die Hard, depending on whether or not you watched the American release of the movie, you get pretty much what you would expect from a Die Hard movie, loads of action along with some witty one liners. Willis, as we know is good at the one line comedy act, add in funny man Justin Long then you have a pretty good winning formula, especially as Long shows here that he is no one trick pony, action, comedy, drama, he can handle them all and does a great job in this movie. It’s a proper action movie just like the original Die Hard franchise, only this time its been updated to give it that 21st century feel. It doesn’t take that feel over the top though, the CGI is handled well and most of the combat action is done hand to hand as it would have been in the originals with people doing real stunts, it certainly adds to the realism.

In an action movie you need a good bad guy, or girl of course and in Die Hard 4.0 we are provided with both. I’ll be honest I’m not the biggest Timothy Olyphant fan, here the guy does ok but he is more the stand and shout the order to his “runners” with guns type of guy. The real bad girl kick ass action comes of course from Maggie Q, she has done it plenty times before (see Nikita and Mission Impossible III) and certainly hands Mr Willis his ass on a plate in this movie. Maggie is the real villain here for me, Mr Olyphant is way to posh to pull this kind of stuff off, although he is very good a staring intensely at things or people.

I say this all the time when doing movie reviews but here it is again, if its a popcorn Saturday night on the sofa you want and you can’t be bothered to use your brain to much then Die Hard 4.0 will be right up your street.

Would I watch it again?

Oh yes, you can be sure of that.

More evidence that Bruce Willis is a funny guy.

Sorry about the quality;

TV News: DANIEL CRAIG Will Star In Two More JAMES BOND Moives

type='html'>
It’s great news for fans of the James Bond franchise this week as its been officially confirmed that Daniel Craig, who in 2006 signed up for his licence to kill in three bond movies has now signed to star as Britain’s favourite secret agent in another two, which like the previous ones will be financed by MGM and Sony pictures. The movies will put Daniel Craig into third on the list behind Roger Moore, who played Bond seven times and Sean Connery who played Bond on six occasions (plus one unofficial Bond movie Never Say Never Again). Craig will make it five movies taking over his predecessor Pierce Brosnan who made four.

Personally I see this as great news, for me Daniel Craig has totally re-invented the Bond franchise. I wouldn’t say I’ve been the biggest fan of Bond movies in the past, in fact I haven’t seen most of them. My main squeeze would have to have been the Sean Connery era if any, I’ve only seen Die Another Day from the Pierce Brosnan days and I made my feelings clear on that one a while back now.

2006’s Casino Royale really saw Bond taken back to how it should be, no silly gadgets just pure kick ass action with an actor in Daniel Craig who really did look like he could kick serious ass, the love story was still there as it is in all Bond outings but being the prequel it showed us why Bond dealt with the lady’s in the latter (although made before) movies. Two years later 2008 saw the release of Quantum of Solace, panned by some critics as disappointing and not as good as the first, I don’t share that opinion I think Quantum of Solace was every bit as good and you can check out my thoughts on proceedings here.

In October this year Craig’s third outing as Bond will be released in the UK. Skyfall comes four years after Quantum of Solace and in the mean time Daniel has been off getting married to Rachael Weisz and making other movies such as The Invasion which I reviewed a while back, an unusually long break thanks to MGM’s financial troubles of late, however writers and producers are glad of the break as they feel they’ve had more time to do a “proper” job on the movie which I posted the trailer for a while ago, all the regulars will be back including Judi Dench as M. New people are coming into the mix with “Q” back in the Bond franchise for the first time since the days of Brosnan and will be played by Ben Wishaw, and there is a new bad guy in the shape of Javier Bardem.

Personally I can’t wait for Skyfall, one of 2012’s most anticipated movies and Daniel Craig signing on for another two Bond movies is not a bad thing in my opinion.

5 End of Summer Cuts from SPECTRASOUL - Guest Post

type='html'>
Spectrasoul, aka David Kennett and Jack Stevens, are a Drum and Bass duo who have played the world over and have come up with some great original tunes. Their seriously cool bass and drum combination has created some wide interest in the music world. They are consistent in their output of cool, clean tracks that hit the clubs, captivating them with their stylish mix of drums, bass and Technostyle. Add some great vocals and you have brilliant songs which will endure the test of time. The Brighton lads came on the scene in 2006 and released their debut single Alibi on the Critical Music label in 2008. They soon came to the attention of the public and have been working hard ever since, visiting night clubs, festivals and smaller venues. They are the masters of creating beautiful tracks in a whole spectrum of sound. Their tunes grab your attention immediately. They are bang up-to-date and timelessly evocative at the same time. Excellent high quality mixes which are both dance floor classics and easy to listen to tracks.

Polished and utterly professional in their approach, they have produced some great new tracks, each one streamlined and slick, which can be heard on the following links.

Here’s a taster of their summer tracks:

Melodies featuring Mike Knight on the Exit label in 12”.

Great vocals by Mike Knight and a fantastic mind-blowing bass and drum section with a great boom-factor.

Away With Me (Calibre Remix) on the Label: Shogun Audio on 12”.

This track is upbeat and very atmospheric. It has a clever use of echo and sound mix and sultry vocals.

Light in the Dark features Terri Walker, on the Shogun Audio label in 12” format.

Terri Walker’s soulful voice is stirring and evocative and this mix has an edge over the other songs. This is a great tune for lying back with a glass of wine, chilling out with your lover.

Alibi on the Critical label, in 12” format.

This is a great classic dance track, which has kept people moving on the dance floor for a few years now. It is spookily metropolitan in its delivery. This would make great film music.

Lost Disciple on the Shogun label, in 12” format.

This is a very atmospheric track with an almost plaintive apocalyptic feel to it. It’s very easy to listen to.

David Kennet/Jack Stevens: Spectrasoul
Spectrasoul’s cleverly arranged tracks will reach people who are otherwise indifferent to
Drum and Bass records.  All of the above, plus more are currently available on vinyl release at our favourite London record store BM Soho.

TV Review: FALLING SKIES Season 2 The March To Charleston

type='html'>
Season 2 of TNT’s Falling Skies premiered to quite good audiences, thanks to a solid first season the show had begun to gather momentum, I decided that to keep up with the US on this was a waste of my bandwidth and I should just hang for it to premiere four weeks later on the UK’s FX network. Following the season 1 finale I hadn’t really decided whether I would watch the second or not, but I have to say I’m pleased I did as Falling Skies has now been renewed for a third season and as promised TNT ramped up the action and story in this second season and they have firmly cemented it as one of my favourite non fall shows, essential summer viewing when all of our regular favourites are away.

At the end of that first season Tom Mason (Noah Wyle) willingly got into an alien spacecraft for reasons unknown, season 2 sees him return to Human resistance group the 2nd mass, any explanation? Of course not, Tom has just been tucked away on an alien ship for the last three months and he doesn’t know why. I was expecting answers to this but actually I don’t care that they didn’t come because this second season of Falling Skies was even better than the first in my opinion. This season introduced a new angle to the Skitters who were the season one protagonists, the alien foot soldiers who the 2nd mass were fighting or hiding from on a daily basis. Turns out the Skitters were kids who had been harnessed by the aliens when they invaded other planets, in season 2 they wanted to stage a fight back, a section of them formed a resistance group and communicated with Commander Weaver and Tom Mason through Tom’s son Ben, Their plan? To kill their overlords and then co-exist as one big happy family.

The 2nd mass however have other plans, get to Charleston, a town they know is occupied by military and where a new civilisation has been started, kind of like Terra Nova, just this time were not 85 million years in the past. I think what I enjoyed about season 2 was the fact they were on kind of a road trip, the 2nd mass didn’t find themselves bogged down in once location too often and like season 2 of The Walking Dead that added to the danger that was on offer from Mech’s and Skitters, although Mech’s really didn’t feature to heavily in the second season I only recall seeing them in the opening battle which was probably one of the best in the entire season.

As with most new season, Falling Skies introduced some new characters to the mix, first was an impressive new addition Jamil Dexter (The Killing’s Brandon Jay McLaren) a voice of some authority in the 2nd mass ranks and also a handy mechanic, however no sooner did his story get going they killed him off, I thought a bigger named actor may have been granted a little more screen time than the five or six episodes he was treated too.

If I had to say anything about the second season it would be the story line involving Charleston, I have no problem with it per-se but right from the beginning (or at least mid way) of the first season the mission for the 2nd mass has always been to get to Charleston, they finally get there at episode six or seven, however they find that Charleston is not all it was cracked up to be, they have formed a government with Arthur Manchester (Lost’s Terry O’Quinn) as President, he has helped form a military and the citizens of Charleston find themselves some what oppressed, not allowed to leave the confines of the city which will be the US Capital when order is restored.  The 2nd mass, being on their own for such a long time don’t take lightly to being treat this way, they have countless run in’s with both Manchester and the military before finally deciding that the city walls of Charleston are not really for them.

All that brought about what season 2 was really setting up, the march into season 3 and possibly many more for this show. Earlier in the season Ben Mason (Connor Jessup) had decided that he didn’t belong with the 2nd mass and much to Tom’s dislike he took off to go live with the rebel Skitters in order to help them kill their overlords. That’s where this got interesting but it should maybe have been introduced into the story a little sooner. The apparently “safe” Charleston was very easily breached by Ben and a bunch of his Skitter pals in the final episode, he came to inform them all of some laser gun (which is way to geeky for me to remember the name of) that was going to be used by the over lords to kill them all. The shift then came about and it looked like Charleston was not the be all and end all of the story and focus should probably have been put onto this laser gun thingy mabob a little sooner, at least then we could have had time to build to it.

Thinking those would be the final scenes of the second season we were dealt another surprise. Hal Mason (Drew Roy) had been knocked unconscious during the battle to destroy the laser gun (I’m starting to sound way too geeky now, that’s three times) and woke up in a room on his own, even after the 2nd mass had agreed to keep an eye on him, he had one of those weird alien worms (sounding geeky again!) crawling out his eye and then back into his ear with a real creepy “let me get my mission started” smile on his face. So you can be sure that Hal is going to be worth keeping an eye on during the third season. Then just as the gun (I’ll leave the geeky bit out this time) is destroyed loads of things drop from the sky one of which turns out to be a space ship (seriously I’m not a geek) and another new alien steps out, roll credits. Season three will no doubt be bringing us the answers, who are the new aliens? Are they friends are foes? Maybe that gun was pointing up to keep them away, who knows?

One thing is for sure Falling Skies done a great job of cementing its reputation for me during its second season and I look forward to what season three has to offer, especially as the 2nd mass would seem set to leave Charleston meaning that its once again going to be a bit of a road trip.
